Originally inhabited by the Ohlone people, the area around Hayward became
part of a Spanish land grant called Rancho San Lorenzo in 1841. A portion
of the land was bought by William Dutton Hayward during the California
Gold Rush; Hayward built a hotel, after which some historians believe
the city is named.
Today, Hayward has a population of 149,392 and is the sixth largest city
