How to Support Others Going Through the Grieving Process

Last updated 10 months ago

When someone close to you is grieving, you are likely inclined to want to support and assist that person in every way you can. Because the grieving process is highly personal and different for everyone, it can be difficult to know what to say or how to act around your loved one. Here is some helpful advice from a Bay Area funeral home that can help you support your loved one.

Express Yourself

It can be helpful for both you and your loved one if you express your condolences and your genuine desire to support him or her. You may be worried about the wording of your condolences, but try not to be. When you are expressing sympathy, it is okay to acknowledge the reason for your sympathy.

Listen

One of the most important ways that you can offer your support is by lending your ear to actively listen. When talking with your loved one, let him or her guide the conversation. Be compassionate, and don’t try to fill silences—they might come just before your friend or family member opens up about things he or she really wants to talk about.

Offer Assistance

Ask to help run errands, do some cleaning, and assist in any way you can. You can even offer to assist with any funeral arrangements your loved one may need help with.

Follow Through and Follow Up

If you commit to doing something with or for your loved one, follow through on your commitment. This will remind your loved one that you care about him or her. Follow up in the days and weeks to come, and call a help hotline or 911 if your loved one vocalizes suicidal thoughts.
